UEFS SummerClass Field Epidemiology

What is UEFS 2024  Summer Class in Field Epidemiology?

UEFS 2024 Summer Class in Field Epidemiology aims to train professionals, undergraduate and graduate students capable of managing a plan to analyze the health conditions of a population, particularly regarding major diseases and injuries caused by infectious and parasitic agents, considering the interaction of Human, Animal and Environmental Health fields from a One Health perspective. Classes will be formed by Brazilian and international undergraduate students, mentored by a student from one of the graduate programs involved in organizing the event. During the first week in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil, these groups will receive theoretical and practical training in planning, data collection, and epidemiological analysis, including spatial dimension, as well as practical training in coprological diagnosis techniques and serological antibody detection. At the end of this first week, the teams will be relocated to the UEFS Chapada Diamantina Advanced Campus, in Lençóis - BA, where they will spend two days collecting blood and stool samples from humans and dogs, as well as samples of vectors and water, which will be examined for the presence of parasites. Blood samples will be investigated for antibodies against bacterial, viral, and protozoan agents, depending on the available kits. As the results are produced, they will be compiled and analyzed, and at the end of the fieldwork, the results will be presented to local health teams, along with relevant recommendations. Vectors and water samples may undergo on-site genetic sequencing to contribute to phylogenetic studies and the spatial distribution of arboviruses in Brazil. This edition is expected to include the presence of foreign experts from American, Argentine, and French universities, as well as international participants, with the aim of promoting and consolidating the internationalization process of the graduate programs.
